Is Surgery the Only Answer for Lumbar Stenosis?

I came across a great article written by Bob Johnson from Medfaxx. He shared some great tips for dealing with Lumbar Stenosis, I'll summarize here.

What is Lumbar Stenosis?

In Lumbar stenois, charictaristically the  spinal canal narrows and causes neurologic symptoms. It is usually a painful situation. Typically occurs in people over 50 years of age. The most common sign of lumbar stenosis is pain in the back and legs which is aggravated by bending backwards, standing and walking. The pain is lessened by bending forward and to the sides.

Conventinal Doctors

Historically most physicians viewed spinal stenosis as a condition, that is just not going to get better only worse over time. Surgery was the only hope for improvement.

New Modalities

There are some non-surgical options available. These tend to work better with an early diagnosis and a pro-active approach.
  • Stretching
  • Strength training
  • Interferential therapy
  • Chiropractic
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Physical therapy
One of the challenges spinal stenosis sufferers face is moving there body. The pain makes it difficult. Exercise and stretching is the very thing they need. That's where Interferential therapy comes in.

Portable Interferential Therapy

In the past interferential treatment was only available in the clinic. Modern technology has allowed the development of a portable unit for in home use.

Interferential therapy provides immediate pain relief in many cases. Multiple treatments will provide prolonged pain relief progressing over time which is called "carryover effect". The interferential treatments can be utilized right before exercise, as well as  during exercise. This allows stretching and rehabilitation exercises can be continued longer and with greater range of motion.
